Mannnnn! This joint right chea...hard as nails!
Since The Weatherman LP dropped in 2007, Evidence left his fan base waiting for his next official project. Here it is, and it was absolutely worth the wait. The timing could not have been more perfect. 9/27 will go down in history as the day Hip Hop was revitalized. Along with the release of Cats and Dogs, 9th Wonder, Phonte, J Cole, and even Heavy D will have dropped projects on this day. Ain't life grand?
Before I get into it, quick side note. While doing a little research for this post, I came across Evidence's bio. He was born in 76, like myself, and his birthday makes him a Sagittarius, like myself. No wonder why I feel such a connection to him. So (eh hem) Ev, if you reading this, Haaaaai. I've been a fan since (fill in the blank)....and I just love your (fill in the blank), hit me up on (fill in the blank). That is all.
Alrighty then
One of my acquaintances said that I'm officially a music critic now since I did my first not so positive post. So because of this, I have re-added my ratings and this one is FIYAH and a half! It bangs from beginning to end. It's unskippable, and I even got chills on a few tracks. Production on this joint is so hard hitting. And just when you think you heard the best cut, it's followed by another outrageously banging track. I don't need to comment on lyricism because it's understood that Evidence is good at his craft (he's nice on the beats too). So how does Cats and Dogs measure up to The Weatherman LP? Hard to say. I mean Weatherman is classic in its own right and there are some crazy tunes on it like A Moment in Time, LetYourselfGo, and Chase the Clouds (that still gives me chills). But Cats and Dogs, to me, is a continuation of Weatherman. It's the same Evidence, which is a good thing, and he didn't try throwing some 2011experimental shit in it (which isn't in his nature anyway). So for me, Weatherman has a slight lead over Cats and Dogs, but not by much. He continues to give us relatable, and realistic lyrics, and the beats are just fanatical.
So my top tracks are as follows:
1. Strangers - Good choice for the first track. Sets the mood for what we're in for
2. The Red Carpet ft Raekwon and Ras Kass
3. It Wasn't Me - Banger
4. I Don't Need Love - Crazy
5. You
6. James Hendrix
7. Falling Down
8. The Epilogue
You have Evidence, Premier, and The Alchemist, to name a few, on the beats. 17 tracks of that shit that makes you want to slap your momma. Prodigy makes a feature on this project too, which is so fitting. I highly recommend adding this one to your library. Well done Evidence.
